Target audience for thrillers

Each genre typically has a speific target audience that it reaches to. However, the thriller genre is such a broad genre that each sub-genre reaches to a new and different target audience. A target audience is a group of people which would be thought to like the media text that is produced the most. A target audience can be defined by factors such as age and genre.

The thriller genre reaches many target audiences through it's variety of sub-genres, some examples of target audiences for particular sub-genres are as follows:

Action/Adventure Thriller - 20 to 40 year old male
Horror Thriller - 20 to 30 year old males and females
Supernatural Thriller - 20 to 30 year old female
Gangster Thriller - 20 to 40 year old male
Sci-fi Thriller - 20 to 40 year old male
Conspiracy Thriller - 30 to 50 year old male

Most thriller sub-genres will target males, due to many thriller films containing fast paced and adrenaline filled scenes of action. However, this is not always the case, as genres such as supernatural and horror thrillers gain their thrills from significant and seperate jumps. Also note that conspiracy thrillers have an older target audience, this is partly due to the more complex narrative, containing more in depth storylines and character backgrounds which may not appeal to a younger audience who usually prefers more action than narrative.
