Definition of a thriller

The thriller genre is hard to define into one key base of ideas as it is one of the broadest genres available to find. The genre can be broken up into many sub-genres which I will discuss later. Usually, the only media texts you would find a thriller in is in a movie or television show, however some books can be considered as thrillers also. Thrillers typically are designed to be full of suspense and make the audience ‘jump’.

A few examples of Thriller sub-genres include:

-Action/Adventure
-Conspiracy
-Hostage
-Sci-fi
-Serial Killer
-Supernatural
-Terrorist
-Disaster
-Horror
-Gangster
-Comedy

As you can see, there are many different sub-genres, all with different narrative styles and target audiences.

Here are some examples of thriller films in different sub-genres:

Alien Vs Predator - Requiem
Sci-Fi Thriller
Shoot 'Em Up
Action Thriller

Taken
